I often use 1/4" BSF on motorcycle work. Never had any problem in over 50 years. The class of thread is pretty tolerant of any mismatch.
WebbWhitworth wrench sizes indicate the size of the bolt, i.e., a wrench required for a 1/4 BSW bolt will have "1/4W" stamped on it. The wrench required for the equivalent ¼ UNC has "7/16" stamped on it, this being the dimension across the flats of the hexagonal bolt-head.

When I place a UNC thread against a BSW thread and look with a magnifying glass, the top of the BSW threads touch the bottom of the UNC threads, and the difference in angle can be seen. Probably this is the best way of telling the difference, for larger thread sizes. A standard 1/4 thread or SAE has less thread per inch at 20 for coarse or 24 for fine. I guess the cheap brass bar darts are not up to the same standards as the tungsten ones.
